Choosing the right Shopping Cart or Ecommerce System

What is a shopping cart. A shopping cart allows customers to purchase multiple items add the items to a basket and checkout with a single payment. They can browse your entire catalog, and view a consolidated list of all their items before purchasing. The shopping cart will also allow the visitor to add or delete items from the basket. Your shopping cart then connects to a credit card service. (Some third-party companies i.e. PayPal and others act as both shopping cart and merchant services) There are two basic types of shopping cart solutions, third-party or shopping cart software applications installed on the clients' server.

What are merchant services: Merchant services providers allow merchants to accept credit card payments. This service is then connected to the shopping cart. Most merchant service providers have a monthly fee.

Considerations for choosing your shopping cart:

Choosing the right type of technology that works best for your business.
Internet Marketing Program. If you're planning on an internet marketing strategy, some shopping carts work better than others.
Long term goals. For example if the client chooses a third-party shopping cart solution, the fees associated with the third-party solution can exceed what the cost of a shopping cart application would be.

Paypal is a third party shopping cart. It allows an individual or merchants to collect payments via credit card or their Paypal account, without having a merchant services account.
One can also use it as a shopping cart and checkout. Paypal has limitations and for some business it charges for services.

Other third party shopping carts are available, they too have limitations and charge monthly fees depending on the number of transactions or clients and services they provide. These fees can range from $29.00 - $129.00 per month.

Shopping cart software or applications are installed on the clients server and are considered a more professional way of doing business. Shopping cart applications are flexiable and allow programmers to customize the code to the customers specs. They have can be managed by the client via an admin panel.
